Thermal Pallet Covers: Another Great Innovation by Power Plastics
Cold chain supply partner Power Plastics Covers and Liners – minimising losses with an affordable alternative to refrigerated transport. Thermal Pallet Covers might just be the solution you have been looking for.
Power Plastics, South African manufacturer of covers and liners, has an excellent grasp of logistics in Africa and the challenges associated with moving temperature-sensitive goods. Applying this insight and manufacturing expertise, this innovative company has developed one of the leading ranges of Thermal Pallet Covers in Southern Africa, helping freight companies and brands with cold chain transit lines to avoid spoilage and minimize losses.
“The biggest enemies in the cold chain are time delays and temperature fluctuations so one must take proactive steps to maintain optimal temperatures in transit. Losses can quickly add up to hundreds of thousands of Rands, especially when moving items like pharmaceuticals, chemicals, high-end wines, foodstuff and beer,” says Roger McCallum of Power Plastics.
Each pallet cover has four layers of material, including outer layers of protective coated polypropylene, a specialised foil to reflect 97% heat and an inner insulating layer with polyester fibre wadding.
All covers are custom-made to suit the pallet dimensions and load heights and are available in varying thicknesses from 20mm to 40mm depending on whether the goods are frozen or not as well as the length of time in transit.
For easy loading and unloading, the cover has one to four slits which are closed with industrial strength Velcro. It is recommended that a thermal bottom mat is placed on the pallet before the goods are loaded. The cover is then simply pulled over the load from the back and closed using the Velcro fastening. This creates a sealed cooler box effect. The load heights generally vary between 0.8m to 2m but can be made to accommodate any size.
The load heights vary from 0.8m to 2m and the covers can be custom made to accommodate pallets of any size and load height. They can also be used with Rolltainers that are commonly used in the retail industry, fitted inside or outside the cage.
The covers are hygienic, food-safe, lightweight to handle, easy to clean, re-usable and durable. Care must be taken to store the covers in a cool place to enhance efficiency as the materials absorb the cold.
Another innovative Power Plastics product is the thermal container liner which is widely used when transporting temperature-sensitive goods in either 20-foot or 40-foot shipping containers. They are commonly used when exporting products such as wines, nuts, fresh fruits, seeds, grain, and other foodstuffs in bulk. Made from an aluminium based barrier foil, the entire container is lined and sealed at the doors once loaded. This creates a sealed environment that maintains a constant temperature inside the container of between 16 and 25 degrees Celsius and withstands ambient temperature fluctuations from the outside, which can range from freezing to 70 degrees Celsius, depending on the route and time on the vessel or truck.
“Thermal container liners are very cost-effective compared to the entire container load being rejected at its destination due to temperature spoilage. The liners can be fitted by a single person and no additional tools or materials are required as the liners are delivered fully kitted.
“When you look at the cold chain logistics of today versus just 10 years ago, goods are moving a lot further afield from their source and they have to move quicker than ever before. The cost of moving goods must be streamlined too. We wanted to develop a line that takes all this into consideration and offers a highly effective and financially viable alternative to costly refrigerated transport. As to our extensive design capabilities, we are yet to receive a specification that we can’t design a thermal pallet cover for. We pride ourselves on being able to meet any challenge!” concludes McCallum.
