Ottevanger Milling Engineers: Containerized plants
By Paul Eijmberts, Ottevanger Milling Engineers
Ottevanger Milling Engineers is based in The Netherlands. The company is established in 1909 and specializes in equipment and engineering for the feed milling industry. The 105 years of experience took Ottevanger Milling Engineers from a small company providing milling solutions to a well-respected global player with hundreds of international references. Ottevanger provides equipment and engineering solutions for a wide range of applications:
- Feed mills
- Aquafeed mills
- Pet food plants
- Premix plants
- Wood processing plant
- Soya processing plants
- Cereal processing plants
- Oilseed processing plants
Ottevanger’s core business relates to animal feeds, at capacities ranging from 1 ton/hour to 200 ton/hour. The customers range from small to large multi-national companies. Feed milling solutions are project-specific, taking into account the customer’s specific requirements. With the innovative approach, Ottevanger brought several successful products and solutions to the market and managed to be a respected player in the feed mill market.
“What is my benefit of choosing a containerized plant?”
Ottevanger Milling Engineers is the pioneering supplier of Containerized Feed mills. The containerized design is modular with capacities up to 45 ton per hour. As the practical design of such feed mill is different from conventional feed mills, it comes with multiple benefits for the customer. This modular feed mill setup is unique in the market and introduced successfully over 30 years ago, and since then hundreds of containerized plants were installed globally.
Ottevanger Milling Engineers: Feedmill solutions
In general two types of feed mills exist in the market; simple on-farm solutions for producing mash mixtures, and conventional feed mills for more sophisticated production of different compound feeds. Conventional feed mills are constructed as concrete structures; steel structures or a combination thereof.
The Ottevanger Milling Engineers containerized feed mill concept
The third feed mill type in the market, is the Containerized Feed mill, a modular feed mill setup with a broad and flexible range of solutions. This unique concept of modular feed mills comes with multiple solutions, for feed mill plants, aqua feed plants, but also for premix plants.
FIELDS OF USE
The containerized concept can be used for regular animal feed production, for poultry, ruminant and piggery. Fish feed production for sinking, slow sinking or floating feeds and for all important commercial aquaculture species, are designed in this modular format. Plants for pet food and premixes also find proper solution in containerized plants.
Benefits of Ottevanger Milling Engineers containerized plants
Containerized feed mills offer several advantages to customers. Based on the requirements of the customer a proper flow diagram is composed, with the perfect sequence of process steps, converting raw materials into high-quality compound feeds.
1. Flexible Design with Expansion Possibilities
In the Engineering Department the process flow is converted into a layout with the proper sequence of machines, to be implemented in the container concept. The production of the main machines, additional equipment and parts, but also the container frames takes place fully in-house. At the end of the production the equipment is assembled in the designated container frame; which will be part of the steel structure. The container frames are custom manufactured for a specific (containerized) feed mill design, and meet international shipping standards, but are also in line with international building codes.
The modularity allows the customer expansion of their feed mill at a later date, and capacity increases can be realized without big additional investments.
2. All equipment pre-assembled and tested (ex-works);
During production all machines are aligned and perfectly positioned in the container frame; pre-assembled and pre- tested ex-works.
3. Lower freight costs (container frame is also the frame for shipment)
Besides being the steel structure of the machine tower, the container is also the container frame for shipment, bringing the benefit of reduced transport costs, as numerous containers carrying steel members for structural steelwork are not required anymore.
4. Equipment is inside frame (protected against damage while erected)
During transport and erection the main machines are carefully protected against damage, by the frame.
5. Lower building costs (shed-type building)
As the feed mill design is based on container frames, the compactness of the machine towers (2.5 x 6.0 meter per tower), either for grinding/mixing tower or for pelleting tower(s), only occupies a small footprint.
Due to the limited machine tower height (appr0x 10 meters, instead of 30-40 meter for conventional feed mills) the machine towers can be positioned in a normal shed-type warehouse building, requiring a limited civil works (foundation) as the weight loads are much smaller than with conventional feed mill towers. An expensive feed mill tower, with tons of steel, is also not required, giving significant cost savings on the feed mill building.
After transport, on-site the containers are stacked together in proper sequence, opened, mechanically and electrically connected, and production can start.
6. Minimal erection time (weeks instead of months)
Installation of the containerized feed mill comes with a very limited erection time in respect to conventional feed mills; saving many months of erection time, supervision, hiring personnel and tools. Besides that, feed production can start much earlier. Generally it can be said that erecting a containerized feed mill takes a certain number of weeks, for a conventional type of feed mill it this takes the same number, but then in months.
In case relocation of the feed mill is required, the modularity allows you to de-mount, move and re-mount the feed mill easily.
7. High quality, durable equipment (EU-quality)
All equipment is produced in The Netherlands and meets the European standards, and is designed on high quality, high durability, low maintenance and good serviceability.
8. Multiple applications possible;
The containerized concept can be used for multiple applications, like: plants for mash, pelleted/crumbled feed or combination of both, for fish feed production (sinking, floating, slowly sinking), pet food plants, premix plants.
9. Good serviceability and easy maintenance
Although containerized plants are compact in design, they still offer sufficient space for general maintenance.
10. Project lead time is limited (from design to feed-production)
Due to the limited erection time, the timeline for projects for containerized feed mills is much shorter in respect to conventional feed mills.
CONCLUSIONS
The concept of containerized feed mills has been explained, and returning to today’s question “What is my benefit of a Containerized Plant”, it could be concluded that containerized feed mills provide many benefits when compared to conventional feed mills.
It provides a well-designed; complete and cost-efficient solution that is time-effective in terms of construction and establishment while maintaining quality, functionality and performance.
