Apple varieties with low chill requirements suitable for warmer parts of Africa are doing well in South Africa on nearly 500ha of trial plantings established in warmer areas across the country.
These varieties, that do not require the same number of chilling hours in winter as normal apples, are one of two ways in which climate change is being addressed and show much potential to enhance apple production elsewhere in Africa.
