ORO-SOIL with OROWET®-technology helps to make every drop count

PROMOTIONAL FEATURE | 6 MAY 2016

Water is a very precious resource today. Soil limitations like compaction and hydrophobicity can cause wastage through run-off and excessive evaporation. The Oro Agri product ORO-SOIL® can assist to alleviate or overcome these problems so that water can be used more efficiently.

Oro Agri SA (Pty) Ltd manufactures products with unique OROWET® technology for use in both integrated as well as conventional pest control programs in agriculture and gardens. Since the founding of the company in 2001 ORO AGRI has grown to a multi-national supplier of environmentally friendly products which are successfully used today in more than 80 countries globally. Of these Brazil, USA, Spain, France, South Africa, China, India and Australia are currently the largest markets.

The head office of Oro Agri SA (Pty) Ltd is located in Somerset West. The products are manufactured in Spain, California, Brazil, as well as Cape Town from where it is distributed throughout Sub-Sahara Africa.

OROWET Technology

A unique blend of cold pressed orange oil, a completely renewable raw material, in patented mixtures with various surfactants is used as base to manufacture a range of different product types. The technology has various applications; depending on the formulation, the applied concentration and the registration as required for crop protection products in various countries. At low concentrations, it can be applied as a versatile, multi-purpose adjuvant to improve efficiency of spray applications and enhance the efficacy of various pest control products or herbicides.

At higher rates OROWET-technology can be used as an effective bio-pesticide with contact action against various insects, mites and fungi.

Various OROWET-formulations are currently manufactured in South Africa. This includes products registered as surfactants for example OROSORB® or a bio-pesticide, PREV-AM®, for control of insects, mites and certain fungi, The latest formulation created by the innovative research team at ORO AGRI is a soil conditioner by the name of ORO-SOIL. This product is registered to improve infiltration and distribution of irrigation water in soil, drainage in heavy soils or where compact layers exist and to improve water uptake and retention in hydrophobic or light soils.

Use water more efficiently

Over the past 5 years various trials were conducted to study the effect of ORO-SOIL on water behaviour in various soil types and irrigation systems. Some of the work was done by Nordely Wright (picture below), currently employed by Oro Agri, as part of her MSc Agric degree.

Nordely Wright

Consequently various lab and field trials in different crops were carried out to study the crop responses.

Nordely found that ORO-SOIL improved the rate of infiltration and even distribution of water in soil. These effects are observed after a single application and regular application is usually not required. It is especially effective where soil restrictions such as compaction, crusting or hydrophobicity (water repellency) occur. In light or hydrophobic soil it was proven that distribution of water in soil is more uniform after an ORO-SOIL treatment.

In many trials it was found that penetration resistance decreased (as measured with a penetrometer), resulting in less restriction on root growth.

ORO-SOIL has been tested in various irrigation systems, soil types and crops and benefits differ from one situation to another.

The benefit in drip irrigation is improved lateral movement of water, which leads to a larger wet zone with more uniform moisture distribution. This allows for a larger root zone and consequently improved root development.

In irrigation systems with a higher delivery rate (micro jets or overhead irrigation) the greatest benefit is less wastage through run-off and puddling as infiltration rates are increased.

Benefits may also depend on the soil type.

In light soil types ORO-SOIL will improve water holding to ensure higher and more consistent soil moisture content. This effect is the result of more complete infiltration into all pores, especially micro pores, which often is difficult to wet due to channelling effects and lack of lateral movement in light soils.

Crop performance improves where soil limitations were alleviated after treatment. After treatment, root development is improved where problems such as compaction or water logging inhibited root growth. Positive yield responses are often seen in such conditions, including more uniform fruit or tuber sizes and more uniform ripening which results in more efficient harvest processes and improved marketable quality, e.g. potatoes, onions, tomatoes and other vegetables.

Growers are advised to monitor soil moisture carefully after application of ORO SOIL as it may be necessary to adjust irrigation scheduling since water is absorbed more easily by soil.

ORO-SOIL can therefore assist to use available water more efficiently and to minimise losses from run-off or evaporation.

More efficient water use will also make a difference to ever increasing electricity bills. In situations where water is limited, the grower can now make every drop count and also reduce the effects of water stress on the crop by using ORO-SOIL.
