Jooste: Quality borehole cylinders and pumps for Africa

PROMOTIONAL FEATURE | 29 JUNE 2015

The Jooste Cylinder & Pump Company (Pty) Ltd was established in 1967 by Mr Christie Jooste.

Mr Jooste, a borehole driller at that time, had the vision to develop a borehole pump using a cylinder that delivered more water while using less power compared to the old brass cylinders.

The first stainless steel cylinder was manufactured in 1989 and won the "Cullinan Good Engineering Design Award" in 1993. Over the years the Jooste cylinder has been improved to the cylinder manufactured today. Over 100,000 Jooste cylinders have been produced.

In December 2013, Mr Conleth Costigan became the new director, bringing with him a new vision; a vision to expand the market in South Africa and into Africa, to improve the handpump (the new handpump is already available), to do research and development on a new solar operated pump, small powerhead and a flexible force head.

Products

  • Borehole cylinders
  • Float valves
  • Force cylinders
  • Force heads
  • Submersible adaptors
  • Stroke adjusters
  • Handpumps
  • And other borehole accessories such as adaptor foot valves and pipe protectors

Series and models

  • There are two series of cylinders namely the AS and RDS
  • The AS series is for boreholes from 1 metre to 60 metres
  • The RDS is for boreholes from 60 metres onwards
  • The AS series is available in the following sizes: 50mm, 60mm, 70mm, 80mm, 100mm, 130mm, 150mm & 180mm
  • The AS-RDS series is available in a 50mm, 60mm, 70mm & 80mm size
  • Force cylinders are manufactured in five sizes, namely: 50mm, 60mm, 70mm, 80mm & 100mm

Application of products

  • The borehole cylinder can be used with a windmill, power head or handpump.
  • The force cylinder is surface mounted for pumping from a tank, reservoir or river and can pump up to a height of 240 metres, depending on the distance and size of the pipe.
  • The force head is used to block the rising columns and to force the water into another direction.

Materials

The cylinders are manufactured from stainless steel, polyethylene and polyurethane, all anti-corrosive materials.

Advantages

  • The cylinder requires half the power than a normal cylinder to operate
  • The cylinder is manufactured from the most modern materials
  • It causes considerably less electrolytic corrosion on galvanised pipes
  • There is minimal wear on the cylinder tubes and rings
  • There is an enormous saving on pipes, powerheads and windmill heads
  • The Jooste cylinder produces more water than a normal cylinder
  • It can handle sand better than other cylinders
  • The cylinder has its own unique Jooste foot valve
  • Cylinders are packed in a plastic sleeve with assembling instructions included
